With Tua Tagovailoa on the verge of a monster extension with the Dolphins, the question should be about how much not if.
Over his four years in the NFL, Tua has proven to be an adept quarterback in the right circumstances, and led the league in a number of categories this season. He answered durability questions, while the hurdle of beating good teams remains.
Tagovailoa has earned a deal, but how big
Part of the modern day, social media “educated” fan is their general ignorance of reality and common sense. To pretend Tagovailoa hasn’t earned that contract is both stupid and pays no mind to the Dolphins history at the position since Dan Marino.
Remember, Dan Marino is a big fan of Tagovailoa, but clearly these twitterers no much more about the position than Marino could. And head coach Mike McDaniel is a big fan as well.
But let’s get down to numbers, pretending Tua hasn’t earned the money needs us only to take a cursory look at the top-10 paid QB’s.
Burrow, Herbert, Jackson, Hurts, Wilson, Murray, Watson, Mahomes, Allen, Stafford. Only five of them have appeared in Super Bowls, and only three have won it. Two of the players on this list have never won a playoff game.
So stop pretending Tagovailoa doesn’t deserve a big contract. He will likely be hitting that 5-year $250-million deal. It will likely, given his injury history, and lack of big game wins, feature less in the way of guarantees, but it will he massive.
And Tua Tagovailoa has earned it.
