The Dolphins still haven’t got their contract extension done with franchise QB Tua Tagovailoa and the price continues to rise.
With a deal in the offing for former number-1 pick Trevor Lawrence, the only way this price is going, is up. Jared Goff, yes that Jared Goff has got a deal that can only be described as disastrous for the Dolphins.
Dolphins need to sign Tua NOW
Whether you like it or not, Goff’s $212-m extension has pushed the probability of Tua getting over $50-m per season through the roof. If Miami was hoping to lowball him, that ship has sailed as Goff has proved that average QB’s can get seriously paid.
For the record Goff has 193 touchdown passes and 84 interceptions in his 8 year career. not stellar numbers, but enough to get pushed through that $50-million per year barrier. If Miami waits on the Lawrence deal, the price likely only goes up from here folks.
Whether GM Chris Grier likes it or not, he needs to sign one of the Dolphins best players to an extension. Grier has continually balked at doing a deal for Miami’s own players. He’s more than happy to pay other teams players, but players Miami has drafted not so much.
There’s also one more wrinkle.
Head coach Mike McDaniel has proven that he can win with Tua. He has also publicly stated how much he wants Tua to be his QB for the long term. And how he wants him to get an extension. But then he said similar things about Christian Wilkins.
If your shtick is “we’re a team” you probably need to actually sign one of your guys before everyone starts thinking you’re just a jackass.
It’s time for the Dolphins and Grier and McDaniel to put their money where their mouths are and pay Tua Tagovailoa.
