The Miami Dolphins have selected Penn State edge Chop Robinson with the 21st overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Robinson had 10 sacks in his college career spanning time at Maryland and most recently at Penn State. He’s a dynamic aggressive pass rusher who often wins, but doesn’t finish as often.
With Bradley Chubb and Jaelen Phillips both potentially missing time at the start of 2024 the Dolphins were seen as needing depth at edge, but whether that was the best use of a first round pick remains to be seen.
Dolphins have an explosive, but raw edge rusher
PFF had this to say about the Dolphins latest edge rusher, “Regardless of his lack of polish, Robinson is a gifted player athletically — likely on a level that is top of the class. A lot of what leaves you wanting more from Robinson is coachable. If he can take his game to that next level, he can become a dominant edge defender.”
GM Chris Grier explained the Dolphins thoughts on selecting Robinson. “I mean obviously you always look at your roster for what it is, but for us it was, like we’ve talked about, just adding the best players in the draft at that point,” Grier said. “He was rated as one of the top players in this draft for us, so adding him, especially rushing the passer in this league with all the great quarterbacks and the skill, the ability to rush with four and not have to blitz every down and stuff, that creates an advantage for the defense.
“So for us, he was a player that we had in high regard with high grades, for us to add him, we were again very excited to have him.”
It’s unlikely the Dolphins did actually have Chop Robinson as their best player remaining at 21 so that’s a bit of a weird justification. It’s not the pick along the OL that a lot of fans were hoping for to address the teams biggest weakness, but Robinson has great upside that if he can reach it could make this an excellent pick.
