On a day when the Dolphins offense was spluttering, Jevon Holland produced one of the plays of the season to propel Miami to a comfortable 34-13 win over the Jets.
Leading just 10-6 with 2 seconds left in the first half after back-to-back interceptions, one a pick-six, by Tua Tagovailoa, Jevon Holland returned Jets QB Tim Boyle’s Hail Mary 98 yards for a touchdown. It was another sloppy offensive performance, but one that highlighted just how much the defence has improved from the early weeks of the Dolphins season.
DOLPHINS DEFENCE WINS THE DAY WITH ‘FAIL MARY’
It was a day on which the Dolphins were expected to win easily against a Jets team with very little in the way of offence, but it never felt easy until Holland’s pick-6. “It was a momentum swing going into the half,” Holland said. “They threw a ball, they threw a Hail Mary, kind of desperation. They knew we were getting the ball after the half.”
Head Coach Mike McDaniel was quick to praise the defence, and its improvement over the course of the season. “I think since Week 8, up until this game, we’ve been number one in the league in defense stopping the run and I think that epitomizes the whole team,” McDaniel said. “What they’re doing is what we’ve identified as what we want to do and that’s progress and continue to get better as the season progresses.”
The Dolphins day was soured somewhat with the apparent achilles tear suffered by Jaelan Phillips. The Dolphins young edge-rusher will miss the remainder of the season, and possibly the start of 2024.
