Cam Smith struggling to crack lineup in ’23

Dolphins rookie CB Sam Smith has struggled to take the field for the Dolphins in his rookie campaign, and if Mike McDaniel is to be believed he’s unlikely to see it until next season.

In his presser, McDaniel tried to put a positive spin on Cam Smith’s situation, “It’s just the natural growth. There’s many different journeys that players take and he’s got a room of very capable players and I think you have to do right by the team and right by the player to make sure they’re appropriately versed, and the main thing with him is that by all testaments he’s getting better and better and closer and closer to doing that.”

McDaniel continued, “You don’t just have guys learn on the fly with a position like that in my opinion because it’s like a quarterback where you don’t want to hurt their progression by having them see the field too soon. There can be scar tissue with that. I really like the way Cam goes about his business and he’ll see his time on the field at some point but was not that”

CAM SMITH STRUGGLING

While it’s to be expected that McDaniel will always act positive, it really doesn’t hold much water. Cam Smith has played just 5 snaps so far this season, at a time when the pass defence has been pretty bad. Kader Kohou has been picked on whenever he plays outside, and Eli Apple, even Kelvin Joseph are not top tier corners and have struggled as well.

With Howard and Ramsey already out that means Cam Smith is the Dolphins 6th best corner. At best, assuming he’s ahead of Justin Bethel which he may not be as Bethel has more snaps. While it’s understandable for rookies to need time to develop, Dolphins fans will be getting very bad flashbacks to Noah Igbinoghene’s Dolphins experience.

Here’s hoping Smith can turner the corner soon.
