Dolphins lose Robert on day 1 of free agency

Dolphins starting right guard Robert Hunt is on his way to Carolina on a massive $100-million 5-year deal.

The Dolphins were never really in the market for Hunt, or the previously lost Wilkins, owing to the horrendous cap situation they find themselves in after a recent spending spree by GM Chris Grier.

While Grier deserves some credit for some of the trades he has pulled off, the cap situation that Miami finds themselves in is largely down to him. With overpayments to part-time left tackle Terron Armstead, and big contracts for Tyreek Hill, Jalen Ramsey, and Bradley Chubb, the Dolphins find themselves in no position to try and keep the draft picks where Grier has actually been successful.

Dolphins getting decimated on day one

With Tua Tagovailoa looking at a hefty pay raise, and Jaylen Waddle, Jaelen Phillips, and Jevon Holland looking at new deals potentially next year, things are a bit dicey for a team that doesn’t have a playoff win in a generation.

Robert Hunt’s contract may be seen as an overpay by the Panthers, but PFF grade him as the 7th best guard in the league in 2023, and at just 27 years old and improving every season of his career so far Hunt is only going to get better and better.
