Logan Ryan pricing himself out of Dolphins move

Free-agent cornerback Logan Ryan has reportedly told the Dolphins he is seeking more than $10m per year in his next contract. The former Tennesse Titan has been in talks in recent days with the Jets and Dolphins.

Ryan signed a 3-year $30 million contract in 2017 to join the Titans, and at 29 is looking to sign a bigger deal with his new team. The Dolphins still have $33,845,970 in cap space for the 2020 season (per spotrac), so the Dolphins could still make a move.

As a likely slot corner for the Dolphins, Logan Ryan’s asking price, however, might make the retooling Dolphins balk. Miami already has 14.9%, or $32.5m, tied up in its corners for the coming season, having added Byron Jones in free agency to play opposite Xavien Howard.

The Dolphins also drafted Noah Igbinoghene with the 30th pick in the NFL 2020 draft. While Igbinoghene is still raw, he would be expected to compete for the starting slot-corner.

Ryan would add good experience and depth in the Dolphins secondary, and is familiar with the scheme the Dolphins will run having been with the Patriots from 2013-2016. Ryan is also a stout run stopper, and adds an extra threat in the pass rush.

Logan Ryan was a key component of a Titans defence that made a run all the way to the AFC Championship game last season. He ranked faced the most targets in the NFL in 2019 with 114, and receptions allowed, with 80 catches against.

He also led the league in solo tackles by corners, and tied for eighth with four interceptions. He received a coverage grade of just 60.6 from PFF in 2019.
